New-to-Toronto Furniture and Accessory Brands (That You Can Buy From Home)

These five brands have found a new home in our fair city

Considering our rarely changing surroundings these days, it feels like novelty is in short supply. So if you’re eager for something that’s not only new, but also a completely new furniture brand in Toronto, consider the following brands: Montana, Ayres MX, Nuura, Woud and Karimoku Case Study. All five are recent arrivals to Toronto, and – either through online shops or email – can be ordered from local retailers from the safety of your own home.

Do the Math

Montana’s 36 core components, four depths, five bases and 40 vivid colours are less a single collection than an endlessly combinable system of lightweight furniture and storage. Flutter highboard, $4800, at Average.

Material World

Working with lava rock, marble and local hardwoods, Ayres furniture and home accessory design is restrained and naturalistic, and for good reason: the sinuous, speckled patterning of the materials – all native to Mexico – speaks for itself. Mortar and pestle, $190, at Souvenir.

Northern Lights

Nuura’s unornamented chandeliers, pendants and sconces, artfully fashioned out of glass, brass and steel, marry modern Scandinavian design with the soft shapes and light of the Nordic countryside. Miira 3 pendants, $2130, at Torp.

Global Citizen

With a multinational roster of furniture, lighting and housewares designers – including Toronto’s own MSDS Studio – Woud’s versatile collection builds on the elegant lines and simple materiality of mid-century Danish design. Mono counter stool, $1320, at Urban Mode.

Study Hall

Riffing on the spirit of the Case Study House Program, Karimoku Case Study is a new furniture brand and eight-piece collaboration between Norm Architects and Japanese designer Keiji Ashizawa that features just the essentials. The Eameses would approve. Kinuta A-S01 sofa, $7950, at Mjölk.
